Playtest Two

The second playtest was conducted in exactly the same way as the first, but with a different build and different set of testers. The build includes changes made as a result of the feedback from the first playtest. The quality of the audio is better than the previous test, although the volume is quite low. Like the first test, below you will find a breakdown of each testers stats and noteworthy information about their playthrough.


Puzzles


Tom

Tom ran before jumping on the companion’s head and lifting. No one had done this before. One of the changes I made to the previous build was this tutorial so maybe my wording implies that this is what you have to do.

Tom explored the easy way first and solved the puzzle. He then explored the harder section and solve it the harder way as well.

Tom attempted to jump the gap and died, he then had to redo the previous puzzle to get back. I change this checkpoint to be more forgiving, but perhaps it needs more work. He then attempted to push the longer block at the start of the level before breaking the spikes with the smaller block.

Tom died three times on this puzzle, but managed quite well.

Having solved this puzzle while exploring in the first level, tom just needed to redo it.

Sam

Like Tom, Sam got speed before jumping on the companion and managed to clear the gap quite easily. Even though this is not what I had in mind, it seems to be a good way to clear the gap.

Sam explored the easy section first and then the harder section, going back and forth between them. She eventually solved it the easy way.

When Sam reached this puzzle she went back and forth to the start of the level trying to call the companion.

Accidentally broke the spikes while trying to use the block as a bridge.

Sam died six times here.

Sam really struggled with this section. First, she attempted to use the door to break the chain and then tried to jump on it repeatedly. She noticed the gap in one of the chain links and thought that maybe it was possible to unlink the chain. Eventually I had to point her in the right direction. There was also a bug where the block got stuck on the inside of the door.

Ajay

Ajay solved this the intended way and without dying.

Ajay experimented with the lift and then explored the harder section. He attempted to put the block inside the door and then solved it the easy way.

Ajay approached this puzzle and then turned back to push the smaller block into the longer block.

Ajay died attempting to use the block as a bridge and had to redo the first puzzle. He then broke the spikes on purpose.

Milosz managed to solve the puzzle with no problems, but was hessitant to jump down to the next puzzle because he didn’t know if there was fall damage.

Interestingly, Milosz explored the harder section first and then solved it the easy way. However, once he solved it, he then returned to the harder section and broke the chain without understanding why. Finally, he attempted to take the block with him through the final gate before continuing forward.

Solved this really quickly because he pushed the block from the beginning.

Broke the spikes on purpose.

Milosz found this section quite tricky and died 16 times, the majority on the last spike. I think I will need to look at this and maybe adjust the speed of the pins.

Milosz solved this puzzle the hard way the first time, but didn’t quite understand why. The second time it made more sense and he was able to repeat the solution without issue. I’m not sure whether I like this or not yet. I quite like that you may not understand something early in the game, but come to a realisation later.

Oli died a few times by jumping and then moving which a lot of testers did in the last build. He eventually figured out that he had to get speed and then tried running before jumping on the companion and managed to clear the gap.

Oli experimented with the elevator and then explored the harder section. He tried to get the block onto the elevator and then managed to solve the puzzle the easy way.

Oli didn’t have as many problems as other testers and only died once.

The companion failed to follow at the start of a new game. This was a bug with the companion not reactivating from a deactivated state during a dialogue with an NPCs.


Cameron

Cameron struggle a bit here because he was jumping and then moving instead of the other way around. Before the tutorial tells the player they need to get enough speed, they need to perform the lift ability, by which point they are trying to jump the gap again and dying in the process. I will probably need to change this. Eventually, Cameron asked for help, so I focussed his attention on the speed tutorial and he managed to do it. Like other testers he also thought he needed to get a run up before jumping on the companion.

Cameron explored the harder section first and put the block inside the door, he then solved the puzzle the easy way, but used the elevator in the process which accidentally broke the chain that he had placed in the door previously. It might be too easy to put the block in the chain by accident.

Cameron used the block to break the spikes on purpose.

Cameron died seven times.

Because Cameron broke the chain by accident the first time, there was no issue solving this puzzle. Perhaps it’s now too easy to put the block into the door without knowing why.

Sam explored the harder section first and managed to solve the puzzle the hard way without ever going to the easy part. On his way out of the puzzle he solved the puzzle the easy way. I think I may need to make it clearer that players should explore to the right, perhaps changing the camera focus again?

Sam tried to use the block as a bridge but died, he then tried to jump over the gap. After dying again he explored the beginning of the level and tried to push the longer block to use as a bridge. Finally, he tried to use the smaller block as a bridge and it glitched through the floor and  broke the spikes.

Before attempting to jump through the spikes, Sam tried to get the block from the previous puzzle. Sam only died four times and managed quite well with the difficulty.

Solved it the hard way the first time so he had no problems the second time around.

Encountered a strange animation bug which put the companion in its lift animation at the start of a new level. This is to do with the companion retaining it’s animation state prior to being deactivated.


Jordan

Jordan got stuck here and wasn’t quite sure what he had to do. He eventually managed to get through although maybe it was by accident.

Jordan tried to jump the gap without continuing the tutorial.  After he died, he read the tutorial, but skipped over some information by accident. Once he read the tutorial he tried to get a running start before jumping on the companion, a regular occurence in this build. He managed to do the jump quite easily after reading the tutorial. I think I will need to prevent players from skipping tutorials somehow.

Jordan experimented with the elevator and then explored the harder section, he eventually solved it the easy way.

Jordan pushed the block to the left before returning with it and solving the puzzle.

Jordan was finding the pins quite difficult, but he was enjoying the challenge. He died 15 times before managing to get past.
